McCann’s parents were also her teachers, and they encouraged their home-schooled daughter to pursue her artistic talents. “When my family’s small black and white television stopped working, instead of fixing it my folks bought more markers for me and my sisters and made sure our library cards were in working order,” she said. As a young adult, McCann won the Federal Duck Stamp contest’s junior division, and her painting of a swan was featured on collectible stamps in 2001–2002.

Since then, she has produced art in many forms including cards, stickers, bookplates, furniture, portraits, murals, prints and 3-D objects. Home Education magazine has also featured some of her photos on its cover. McCann hopes her art will eventually taker her back to the drawings of her childhood. “Someday, I’d like to make my living illustrating picture books,” she said.
