Benedictine Pilgrimage to Italy
February 25 -- March 7, 2010
Join Sisters Pat Ruether and Cecelia Prokosch of the Sisters of the Order of Saint Benedict on an 11-day pilgrimage to Italy, February 25 - March 7, 2010. The trip will focus on sites of particular importance to Benedictines, including Benedict's birthplace and the Benedictine monasteries at Subiaco and Montecassino.

Cost per person from New Jersey: $2999 double occupancy; travel from Minneapolis to New Jersey: $295
Cost includes air, hotels, breakfast and dinner and two lunches and sightseeing on deluxe motor coaches with guides and entrance fees. The trip is being arranged by Far Horizons, a reliable tour company that has been working with the National Catholic Development Conference for 40 years.

Itinerary
Day 1: Depart New Jersey for overnight flight to Rome. If 10 people register for the trip from the Minneapolis area, a group departure will be arranged from Minneapolis.
Day 2: Rome/Assisi
After our arrival in Rome, we'll travel by motor coach to our hotel in Assisi.
Day 3: Assisi/Norcia/Assisi
Visit the birthplace of Benedict and the ancient city of Assisi.
Day 4: La Verna/Florence
From Assisi, we'll travel to the Franciscan sanctuary town of La Verna and in the afternoon have a walking tour of Florence.
Day 5: Excursion to Pisa
In the morning we'll travel to Pisa, followed by a leisurely afternoon in Florence.
Day 6: Orvieto
After a visit to the hill town of Orvieto and its beautiful Gothic cathedral, we'll return to Rome.
Day 7: The Vatican
In the morning we'll attend the Papal Audience (subject to availability of His Holiness), and in the afernoon we'll tour the Vatican Museum, including the Sistine Chapel and St. Peter's Basilica.
Day 8: Subiaco
During this day trip from Rome, we'll visit the sacred grotto Sacro Speco, St. Benedict's Abbey and the Abbey of St. Scholastica. This city is also known as the first city in Italy where books were printed. For wonderful photos of this site, click here.
Day 9: Montecassino and Pompei
This day trip includes a visit to the Abbey of Montecassino, founded by St. Benedict circa 529. In the afternoon we'll have an archaeological tour of Pompeii, destroyed by the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AD. For photos of Montecassino, click here.
Day 10: Rome
On this final day of the tour, we'll take a morning tour of the Basilica di San Paolo Fuori le Mura (St. Paul Outside the Walls) and visit the Basilica of San Giovanni (St. John Lateran) and the Cathedral of Rome. In the afternoon we'll tour the sites of ancient Rome, including the Coliseum, Roman Forum and Palatine Hill.
Day 11: Travel back to the US
