Welcome to the Spirituality Center at Saint Benedict’s Monastery!
The Spirituality Center is a place to seek solitude, quiet and peace located on the west end of our Monastery. You are invited to our Center for individual or group retreats, spiritual direction and a variety of faith and educational presentations, workshops and seminars. Women and men of all faith denominations and cultures are welcome!
The monastic grounds and sacred spaces provide an atmosphere for prayer, quiet reflection, reading and relaxation. Guests frequent the wooded walking trails, prairie and farm land that are adjacent to the Spirituality Center. Whether you are here for a few hours, a day or longer, you are invited to join the monastic community for the Liturgy of the Hours, and Eucharist.
The Spirituality Center, a ministry of Saint Benedict’s Monastery, St. Joseph, Minnesota, responds to the human longing for God and invites others to join the monastic community in deepening relationships with God, self, others and all creation.
Trusting in the presence of the Holy Spirit and grounded in the Christian Benedictine monastic tradition, the Spirituality Center will be a prophetic and contemplative presence in Central Minnesota.
Benedictine monasticism dates back to the fourth century, following the time of the Desert Hermits and Eastern Monasticism. Benedictine Spirituality is based on the Rule of Saint Benedict, one of the classic expressions of monastic Christianity. Foundational to the spirituality of the Rule is the primacy of God and the desire to seek God in prayer and community. The focus of Benedictine spirituality is the person and message of Jesus Christ. Benedictine spirituality professes that all creation is good and deserves respect and care. It is a spirituality most commonly expressed in a holistic way of life lived in community under the Rule and a monastic superior. Central to this way of life is the cultivation of a listening heart. The Benedictine cultivates this listening heart by listening and responding to the Word of God in the reflective reading of Scripture (lectio divina), in the daily communal praying of the Psalms, in sacramental celebration, in community and in the experiences of life. Benedictine spirituality bears fruit in service to the church and the world, fostering justice and peace wherever there is a need.
